Yesterday afternoon, an unidentified man was fatally shot in south Baltimore’s Brooklyn neighborhood.

Around 9pm, a 10-year-old boy and two men were shot along North Avenue near Coppin State University. Police say that two gunmen sprayed the scene with bullets and the child was not targeted (as if that makes it any more palatable). None of the victims sustained life-threatening injuries.

This week. five children were shot in the city (aged 10, 16, 17, 17, 17 – killed).

business

After months of rumors, internet giant AOL (part of telecom behemoth Verizon) is buying Canton-based ad-tech company Millennial Media for $248 million. AOL says the move will complement its other advertising platform (AOL’s Ad.com team works out of the Natty Boh tower in Brewers Hill). Since Millennial went public in 2012 at a $1.87 billion valuation, the company has struggled to hold its own against companies like Google and Facebook in the hunt for mobile ad revenue. Depending on who you listen to, AOL’s purchase is either a “mercy kill” for Millennial, taking “the body of what was once a fast-running race car to be stripped for parts” or a “successful exit” that “could be a sign that Baltimore’s status as a startup hot spot is on the rise.”

election

This week, Fells Point bar owner Mike Maraziti joined an increasingly crowded field of candidates for mayor. Maraziti, owner of One-Eyed Mike’s and president of the Fells Point Main Street association, filed paperwork to run in April’s Democratic primary.

Maraziti: “If anyone knows anything about the restaurant business, you’re a politician through and through.”
