After months of rumors, internet giant AOL (part of telecom behemoth Verizon) is buying Canton-based ad-tech company Millennial Media for $248 million. AOL says the move will complement its other advertising platform (AOL’s team works out of the Natty Boh tower in Brewers Hill). Since Millennial went public in 2012 at a $1.87 billion valuation, the company has struggled to hold its own against companies like Google and Facebook in the hunt for mobile ad revenue. Depending on who you listen to, AOL’s purchase is either a “mercy kill” for Millennial, taking “the body of what was once a fast-running race car to be stripped for parts” or a “successful exit” that “could be a sign that Baltimore’s status as a startup hot spot is on the rise.”
