A 17-year-old Frederick Douglass High football player is being charged with attempted murder after brutally beating a teammate on Wednesday, allegedly over a helmet visor. Cellphone video of the attack went viral. Fearing tension, school officials cancelled all after-school activities yesterday (and postponed tonight’s football game against Dunbar HS). Police positioned more than a dozen officers and a helicopter around Douglass and the neighboring Mondawmin transit hub.

A woman was killed in a suspected arson overnight in am apartment building in northeast Baltimore’s Frankford neighborhood. Firefighters had to make six rescues from the burning building. At least one other person sustained non-life-threatening injuries – and seven families were displaced by the fire.

A 27-year-old man riding a dirt bike died in a crash with a minivan yesterday afternoon in east Baltimore. Two people in the minivan were injured. The accident comes amid a recent police crackdown on illegal dirt biking, as city officials waffle on a long-term solution.

Kevin Harris, mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake’s chief spokesman, is leaving city hall for a job with the Peace Corps. Will it be the start of a trend? Since Rawlings-Blake announced she wouldn’t run for re-election, we’ve wondered if some of her senior team would jump ship before her term ends next year.
