Full Tilt – Wednesday, May 20th

The humidity of the last few days is gone, with sun and highs in the 70s today. Tomorrow will by cloudy, with the chance of rain and highs in the 60s.

justice

Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s office is firing back at motions filed by the attorneys for the officers charged in the arrest and death of Freddie Gray. The defense motions called for several (overlapping) things: for the charges to be dismissed, for SA Marilyn Mosby to be recused from the case for conflicts of interest, for prosecutors to present the Gray’s knife to challenge its legality.

The prosecutors’ 11-page response is brutally dismissive of the defense motions, describing how they “bounce from one ridiculous allegation to another, like a pinball on a machine far past ‘TILT.'”

health

Deaths from heroin, other drugs, and alcohol were up 21% across Maryland in 2014. Just over half the deaths (578) came from heroin overdoses. Gov. Larry Hogan and Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Leana Wen each recently started initiatives to increase access to naloxone overdose kits.

police

Despite a surge in violent crime, arrests are down 32% in recent weeks.

State officials say that the General Assembly will still have to sign off on Gov. Hogan’s decisions to divert $68 earmarked for education into the state’s pension plan, and $2 million intended for a arts center for a state police barracks and police hiring spree.
