Michael Johansen, the man shot by police during a December burglary attempt, says he doesn’t want officer Wesley Cagle to go to jail, but just wants him to admit that he was wrong to act like a ‘thug’ and shoot him. On Wednesday, Cagle was charged attempted first-degree murder and other crimes for shooting Johansen after he was already on the ground, wounded, and pinned down by other officers’ guns.
Turning himself in yesterday, Cagle was later released after posting his bail set at $1 million.
This week, Baltimore, population 620,000, passed New York City, population 8,400,000, in homicides for 2015. Yesterday, police announced a Wednesday night shooting victim near Carroll Park in southwest Baltimore from died from his injuries, and a man was shot and killed yesterday afternoon in west Baltimore’s Poppleton neighborhood. The latest murders bring Baltimore to 213 for the year – NYC has 208.
For the second time in a month, a gun was found inside an Eastern District police station holding cell. Detainees are supposed to be searched before entering the police station.
Interim police commissioner Kevin Davis: “It’s unacceptable, it’s unsafe. I can’t believe this happened again. I take it very, very seriously, and I am not happy, to say the least.”

Calvin Young, a 27-year-old engineer and former city youth commissioner, will file to run as a Democrat. Anthony Davis, a hotel executive, announced his campaign last night. Connor Meek, the 27-year-old who wrote an op-ed about his recent mugging and discovery that the police station was closed, also plans to run as an unaffiliated candidate (he’ll have to petition to get on the ballot next fall).
Before this week, the only other candidate to announce a run is minister and homelessness activist Mack Clifton.
