Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake spoke at the National Press Club in Washington yesterday, aiming to focus her remarks on what city leaders want from the federal government (Rawlings-Blake is currently the president of the US Conference of Mayors), but reporters in the room had other ideas. Rawlings-Blake mostly fielded questions about April’s unrest and the city’s preparation for the upcoming trials of the six officers charged in Freddie Gray’s death. The mayor described pre-Freddie Gray Baltimore as a “powder keg” and said that the city should have been better prepared for unrest.

murder

43-year-old Eugene Nesbit was shot and killed on Druid Hill Ave. in the Upton neighborhood last night around 9:30pm. Earlier in the day, a cyclist found a body on a wooded trail in the Armistead Gardens in east Baltimore.

🔥🔫 The Baltimore Sun’s editorial board is fed up with public indifference over Baltimore’s violence, compared to reactions to mass shootings elsewhere:

“But when it happens on a street corner in Baltimore, we — even many of us who live here — are conditioned to gloss over it. The idea that these are things that happen to someone else, maybe even to someone who had it coming, has by now become deeply ingrained in us. Public officials have even been known to reinforce that idea, as in former Police Commissioner Anthony Batts’ assurance after murders and shootings ticked up in 2013 that the violence didn’t affect “everyday citizens” and that “80 to 85 percent” of the victims were black men involved in the drug trade. No need to concern yourself with them, right?”
