badweather

Joaquin looks like it will head out to sea, instead of making landfall along the US East Coast this weekend. Forecasters now expect little direct impact from the storm, though Maryland is still soaking from a front that could drop several more inches of rain in the next 24 hours. Playing it safe, Gov. Larry Hogan declared a state of emergency yesterday. Despite the change in the forecast, a lot of weekend events, including the Fells Point Fun Festival, have been postponed or cancelled.

murder

Yesterday, police announced two Wednesday night homicides. 21-year-old Deyquawn Cooper was fatally shot in his west Baltimore home. Police say they have a person of interest in the shooting in custody. Around 9pm Wednesday, a 32-year-old man was shot to death near Herring Run in northeast Baltimore.

education

9-year-old Darius Clark died Tuesday after suffering a skull fracture and traumatic brain injury in a fall at Gwynns Falls Elementary on September 24th. An attorney for Clark’s family is now questioning if the school responded to Clark’s injuries appropriately, as emergency responders weren’t called until a half hour after his fall.

development

The former home of the famed Haussner’s Restaurant in Highlandtown will be demolished for an apartment building with ground-level retail. The building on Eastern Ave. has been vacant since the restaurant closed in October 1999.

ravens

The Ravens pulled off a 23-20 overtime victory over the Steelers, thanks to a 52-yard field goal from Justin Tucker.

The Sun’s Jeff Zrebiec, who spent most of the last few weeks groaning over the team’s doomed season: “But if the Ravens go on to save their season, they’ll probably look back on this October night at the home of their biggest rival and remember how their playoff run started” OK, Jeff.

The Ravens are now 1-3.
