Freddie Gray, 25, died on Sunday from injuries sustained during arrest by the Baltimore Police on April 12th. Police have still not provided a reason for Gray’s arrest, nor have they released any explanation on how Gray received his injuries while in the back of a police van. According to family, Gray’s spine was 80% severed along with three broken vertebrae and other injuries.
In a press conference yesterday afternoon, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake promised transparency in the investigation (currently being led by the police department). Police Commissioner Anthony Batts claimed “all lives matter” in his department. If transparency and lives actually matter, there would be a swift, public explanation of how someone ended up with a broken neck in the back of a police van. It’s not Serial – it doesn’t take weeks of ambiguity to sort out what happened.
Protesters gathered outside of the Western District police station on Saturday and Sunday, demanding justice for Freddie Gray. More demonstrations are planned for today and the rest of the week.
During Saturday’s protest at the Western station, police shot and wounded a man fleeing a traffic stop a mile away. Police said the man was shot after running through a playground with a gun.
BWI airport is looking at another potential expansion to keep up with growing demand for international travel. The airport is already in the early stages of $125 million expansion effort.
The O’s won two of their three games against the Red Sox this weekend. The teams will finish off the series midday today.
